We are a family of 6 (if you count the dog) who usually reside in Austin, TX. Joe , Aubrey, Loralai (Lou), Juliet (Bean), Jonah (the baby), and Darby (the chug dog). We like to think of ourselves as a typical family, but I don’t think leaving everything you know to live full time in an RV and travel North America is a very typical thing to do? I could be wrong. Typical or Not, this is us…
Mom, Wife, Travler, Friend, Free-spirit, Soon-to-be Homeschooler. I’m a little bit of a lot of different things, like we all are. I like to cook, write, take crappy pictures, be in nature, and spend time with family and friends. When I’m on my game, I like to run, hike, and do yoga. When I’m on my period, I like to sit on the couch, eat jerky and chocolate, and watch 80’s movies. And, yes, I’m breast-feeding in this pic.
Dada, Husband, Solid, Kind, Loving, Capable. He’ s our Man! If he can’t do it, then….we’re screwed. He takes very good care of us; changing tires, gassing up the truck, driving, keeping water lines from freezing, dumping tanks, and I’m sure other manly things that I don’t even know or want to know about! He’s crazy smart and knows about everything, but in this dorky, hot kind of way. Sometimes resistant to change, but always comes around for the team and tons of fun to travel and hike and learn with; plus he carries all the heavy stuff.
Tenacious, Willful, Sweet, Motherly, Fun, Silly. My girl. She’s up, she’s down! Adjusting to travel may be the hardest on her at the start. But she’s a great sport and help and loves her family and swimming and playgrounds. And she puts up with all of mom and dad’s hiking and ranger talks. Super smart! Loves doing crafts and putting on shows and riding her bike, and most of all making new friends.
Sweet, Brave, Loyal, Shy, Giggly. Our sweet girl who loves her big sister and little brother with everything she’s got and loves her Dada and Mama too. She is the constant happiness in our home and even when grumpy makes us all smile with her pouty faces and her “NO! NO!”. Generally is just happy and goes along with whatever we are doing. You will rarely see her without her princess crown, cause she’s a princess! She is literally THE CUTEST THING THAT EVER DID LIVE. And I’m not just saying this because I’m her mama.
The boy. Happy, silly, sweet, Mama’s boy. We all adore him! He’s happiest with his tribe (us). Constantly on the move! His best friend is Darby dog. That may have something to do with him liking to feed her all his snacks? He’s still a little guy/baby, so will update as he reveals more of his personality.
Our little Chug dog. Our 4th child. Blog Mascot. Running partner. Babysitter. Heater. Pillow. Vacuum (how do people survive without a little dog to eat up all their food that drops on the floor?!). Companion for us all. Training is still in progress. Really just need to teach her to come when called instead of running to chase cars or other dogs and her almost certain death!
Lots of people have asked how we are able to travel for long periods of time and afford to do it. The major key to this is that Joe works from home usually, but can really work from anywhere he has a strong internet connection. So he is able to work while we travel as a technical analyst!
We also leave for long enough periods that we can rent the house out. This actually makes us a little money and leaves someone else to pay the mortgage, electric, trash, etc.
I’m a Realtor with a great team and am able to work via phone and email in cooperation with them and still sell a few homes while on the road.
So this is our way of being able to afford to RV travel for months at a time, but we have met several other families that have their way, a lot of them working/camping or just staying in one spot for several months and trading services for free stay, or living off savings, etc. Where there is a will, there is a WAY….your way.
Neither Joe, nor I have done much traveling in our lives and it’s definitely something that appeals to us! There is no better teacher, than experience. We also want to show our kids as much as we can and spend as much time with them as possible, in hopes that they will appreciate all we have done for them to such a degree that they will come home to visit every single Christmas and Thanksgiving for no less than one full week at a time! That’s my dream anyways. We especially love visiting National Parks and Monuments, state parks, and small towns, as you’ll see if you read our blog.
